Project « Musici Scriptores Graeci en ligne (e-MSG) »

In 1895, Carl Jan published his volume of texts Musici Scriptores Graeci, containing a compilation of passages from Aristotle relating to music, musical treatises by various authors (Euclid, Cleonides, Nicomachus, Bacchius the Elder, Gaudentius, Alypius) and the few Greek musical scores that were known at the time.

The Greek texts of these treatises served as a basis for the Greek text of the TLG. They offer an overabundant lexicon of technical musical terms, with definitions that are sometimes complementary or contradictory. A survey of these technical terms is therefore of great use to anyone interested in Greek music theory, which still contains some poorly understood areas.

Our project will therefore be, in the first instance, the whole transcription of this volume in XML. It will be hosted on the E-Man platform (https://eman-archives.org/EMAN/) (ENS-CNRS-PSL).

According to the Manifest of this platform, this work will respect the FAIR principles of open data. The study of the Preface, with its detailed directory of manuscripts, will be treated with references to the

Pinakes database developed by the IRHT (https://pinakes.irht.cnrs.fr/): a careful examination of these manuscripts will allow us to contribute to the Pinakes database by improving the textual records of each manuscript.

The second and most important part of the project is the encoding of technical terms, with data enrichment via the definition field that accompanies each index entry. This field can include definitions, links, bibliographical indications, images for terms that involve graphic representations, etc.

This data enrichment would be a collaborative work and would allow researchers to deposit the results of their research in these definition areas.
